As I said, the captain acts as the central unit in a highly advanced computer. This role allows him to access and evaluate data at extreme pace. He can easily handle the jobs it takes 5 or 10 people to do normally. It also makes him a better commander, he has better understanding and awareness of his environment and he's not boggled down by tedious crew management issues and frequent communication breakdowns are now history." Anu finished, looking over the faces of the thoughtful Caldari standing before him.
One man or many?
Uh, what fire? If pre-pod ships have, according to the blueprints (assuming they are pre-pod blueprints) 6000 crewmember, and a pod pilot can do the job of 5-10, then there's 5990-5995 crewmembers still needed.
"Makes him a better commander" of what? A crew.
Also, from the same story, about 4 paragraphs up:
Quote: "This is a capsule," Anu said to the Caldari. "It is used to control a ship. With it a ship a big as this one can be controlled with only a handful of crew and smaller ships, like your frigates, can even be controlled by a single person."
And to re-state: The Hands Of A Killer clearly indicates the pilot in question is a pod pilot:
Quote: "This is what youÆll face. Madmen locked inside capsules, squandering lives as if they were nothing. When you are up there you are a tool, nothing more. A slave to the will of a pilot, bound to a man immortal until his mind can no longer be cloned." "Mankind has taken to the stars and destruction has followed in its wake. Demigods patrol the lifeless expanse above, and they donÆt care about you. We are pilots. We control your destiny. When you are gone, we will live and we know this."
Sooo... We have two official background stories, both saying that pod piloted ships have crews. We have blueprints of ships, with crew complements. IIRC there were pods in beta, so even if those blueprints are from beta, they were already pod piloted ships. And then there are all the lights on the ships' windows. I guess since there's no-one to turn them on, they burn forever, but why did someone put the lightbulbs in in the first place? On the other hand, we have people who don't want or are unable to read the official background, and who's main argument against crews on ships is "don' wanna".
And to those whining that this is only a matter for roleplayers, you're right. For now it is. Pointing it out repeatedly doesn't change the fact. However, discussing the matter is OOC, so it can't be discussed in the summit.
